Slovenia / A PHOTO STORY
Below the earth. Beneath the cliff.
Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

A day in two landscapes: the illuminated chambers of Postojna Cave, followed by Predjama Castle and the green valley beyond. A photo story by Hermes Abeona.
01 / Below the surface
We visited Postojna Cave first, then continued to Predjama Castle. Together, the two stops became a day of contrasts: enclosed chambers and open countryside, stone shaped by water and walls built against a cliff.
Our morning plan revolved around the cave train. We had 09:45 boarding written in our itinerary, with a target of reaching the meeting place by 09:35. Once underground, the photographs turn towards the formations themselves: pale edges, long shadows and small pools of warm light.
Looking a little closer
The wider views show the scale of the chambers; the closer frames reveal their texture. Narrow forms hang from the ceiling, while heavier columns rise into the light. The walkways give these photographs a human scale—a small line through a much larger landscape.
Back in the green
Outside, the palette changes completely. Trees, water and a distant spire offer a quieter frame between the cave and the castle.
02 / A castle against the cliff
Predjama Castle was our next stop. Here the relationship between building and landscape is the subject: pale walls, dark openings and the rock face rising above them. The viewpoints along the approach offer several ways to compose the same scene.
Turning the camera around
The castle is only part of the view. A frame of yellow flowers brings attention to the foreground; looking out across the valley opens the story again, towards houses, fields and wooded hills. These photographs belong together because they record both the landmark and its surroundings.
Notes from our visit · Postojna Cave
Our itinerary listed train boarding at 09:45 and arrival at the meeting place by 09:35. We allowed around ten minutes to walk from the car park. These were our trip timings, not a current tour schedule.
The official visitor guidance describes the cave as about 10°C year-round. Bring a warm layer and suitable footwear. Check your ticket and the current arrival guidance when planning your own visit.
Notes from our visit · Predjama Castle
Our plan allowed about four minutes to walk from the car park to the castle, with viewpoints along the walkway. We noted an app for the interior visit.
Our saved itinerary listed a 17:30 closing time and EasyPark parking at €3 per hour. These are historical planning notes, not confirmed current opening hours or parking rates. Check the official timetable and the signs at your chosen car park before visiting.
